Where in the world is Matthew Stella?

Liam Mooney - November 5, 2015

Our dear friend Matthew Stella (Creative Advisor at Jackpine) embarked on the journey of a lifetime recently across the continental United States. For close to a month now, Matt has been is riding his motorcycle, ‘Charlene’, far and wide in search of America.

We were sad to see him go, but excited to hear about his journey. Keeping up with Matt’s Facebook posts and Instagram images is one way to keep an eye on him, but we here at Jackpine wanted to take the tracking of Matthew Stella to the next level.

To that end, we present to you the Matt Tracker: the easiest way to track Matt (and Charlene’s) movements across the United States!

Matt Tracker is an interactive map that will update to show you each stop on Matt’s trip. Using his phone to log in to the microsite we developed, Matt posts pictures and stories as points on the map. Each point is also joined by a line, so you can see all of Matt’s glorious journey at a glance.

When Matt logs in to the site, he is prompted to fill out a form which retrieves his current location and asks him to upload a photo. On the back end, we then grab that data and save it to our database. With that data, we work a little web development magic by putting that information into a few JavaScript arrays, then using Google Maps API to create the map. We put the markers on the page and connect them with a simple polyline. All these little steps collectively generate what you see on the Matt Tracker.

We wish Matt the best in his journey and hope he makes it back safely, but in the meantime, this makes for a cool little way to keep up with him and get people engaged and excited about his trip (and of course – show off some of our sweet creative skills here at the studio).

As an added bonus, we have included a feature that allows you to request a postcard from Matt. That’s right, wherever you are you can go to the Matt Tracker, fill in your name and address and Matt will fire you a postcard across the country, continent or even the world!

Think you’re too far away? According to Matt: “Of course not! I’ve already sent some to Europe, and Russia.”

So what are you waiting for? Go ahead get these postcard requests in and stay updated.
