When the federal government announced that new fees would be charged to musicians from outside of Canada to perform in the country we saw it as an attack on creativity, collaboration and the spirit of independent music. The Banned series was our attempt to have some fun by taking a ban on foreign musicians to its extreme. We organized shows and projected musicians--performing live from their home countries--on a screen inside an Ottawa venue. They could not see, hear, or interact with their audience. The first performance brought in Old Monk from Brooklyn, USA, while the second connected an electronic duo named Dialoog where one member played from New Orleans, USA and the other from Amsterdam, Netherlands. In 2014 the government quietly backed down from the application of the proposed fees.
