Jackpine is a full-service Creative Counsel firm from Ottawa, Canada. We’ve worked with clients in over 40 industries from across North America.
The jack pine tree can only propagate when its cones are exposed to extreme heat, that is, when they are set on fire. This process of creation through destruction is a metaphor for how we approach design. We can only reach our preferred outcome by exploring, experimenting, and ultimately destroying all other possibilities.
Jackpine began with a single computer in CEO Liam Mooney’s apartment bedroom. With no startup money, the early incarnation of Jackpine had to build itself up with any small projects that would come its way. It became apparent that to grow into a full service creative agency, Jackpine would need to add a team that could work on larger projects. After getting a team on board that believed in the long term vision of Jackpine, a space was needed to work in. This led to one of the agency’s first major deals, an agreement to work, in exchange for studio space. A charitable donation of furniture outfitted the agency’s new location and suddenly there was a team, and a studio ready to meet future clients.
After building up a roster of clients, Jackpine was able to hire a team of designers, writers, artists, thinkers, coders. Rather than look for people with narrow skills sets, we looked for people with specific mindsets; people who challenged orthodox ideas, pushed boundaries and looked to engage in their communities. This team quickly outgrew its bartered space and moved into its current location in Ottawa’s Chinatown. Jackpine’s DIY ethic has continued to expand and push boundaries as the company has grown. Even though we have worked for the likes of the ONE Campaign, Hyatt Hotels, Claridge Homes, and Engineers Canada, we still dedicate studio hours to pro-bono work with social organizations we believe in, such as: The Alliance to End Homelessness, RecLink, Ottawa Riverkeeper and Ottawa Hollaback. We participate in community art projects, film contests, and any activity we can find that allows us to try something new.
Our Chinatown studio welcomes visitors at almost all hours of the day. If you’re interested in working with us, working for us, or if you just have a zany project that you want to talk about, then feel free to drop by. If you’re looking to hang out and enjoy our fast-growing collection of plants, we gather for refreshments every Friday at around 5pm. Consider this an invitation.
